Welcome to the Wireless History Foundation

The Wireless History Foundation is the first and only effort focused solely on preserving the story of wireless in the United States. The WHF will chronicle the evolution of markets and technology, the contributions of numerous organizations, and the achievements of individuals, all of which fueled the growth of wireless communications.

To make its efforts as inclusive as possible, the foundation has reached out to existing wireless entities, including CTIA-The Wireless Association, the Personal Communications Industry Association, Rural Cellular Association, Radio Club of America, and others.

With the assistance of its partner organizations and corporate sponsors, WHF launched on October 13, 2008, the anniversary of the official commercialization of cellular technology in the United States. The kick-off event was held exactly 25 years after the first cellular system opened for business in Chicago. The festivities attracted wireless pioneers and industry luminaries from the past five decades.

Vision

The vision of the Wireless History Foundation is to educate and inspire future generations about the significance and growth of the wireless communications industry.

Mission

The Wireless History Foundation creates and supports programs connecting members of the wireless industry and enabling them to contribute to the story of wireless. It also helps the general public to understand the events and circumstances underlying the development of wireless communications.

Established by wireless pioneers, the foundation intends to research and publish objective information on the people, products, and events crucial to the development of wireless services for use by individuals, businesses, schools, and government entities. The organization seeks to increase public understanding of wireless and its social and economic impacts by creating a comprehensive wireless history Web site, celebrating landmark events, and supporting recognition programs for extraordinary contributions to the development of wireless.

Programs and Projects

The first project sponsored by the Foundation is the Digital Archives Project. The Digital Archives Project is focused on the digital preservation of materials produced by participants in the development and growth of the cellular industry prior to 1995. More information on the project is available here.
