We started 2012 with the International CES show in Las Vegas this January.  With a new year we saw exciting new products such as new 4G phones, phablets (tab-phones), wireless headphones for use in home theaters and for high quality audio up to 100 ft. away, wireless speakers connecting via Bluetooth, and a laptop with a swiveling screen that folds back & becomes a multitouch tablet. How did we get to this point of such innovation?  It wasn’t that long ago we were still using dial up internet connections and marveling at mobile devices.

Would you rather lose your cell phone or your wallet?  Recently, CNN took an informal poll on the street and most people they interviewed said they would rather lose their wallet.  One young woman said, “I can use my cell phone to cancel my credit cards.  I would be lost without my cell phone.”

If you don’t use an iPod, you might not understand all the fuss.  If you do use an iPod, you probably can’t imagine what it would be like to NOT have all that music in your pocket.  But the real, amazing story of the iPod and why its birth was so important, was how it revolutionized information download, revitalized the music industry, and altered the future of handheld devices.

In spite of our amazing array of electronic devices and internet access options developed over the past quarter century, we still stand on the shoulders of giants.  On October 24, 1861, the transcontinental telegraph ushered in the wired age of America.   It was a huge development: near real-time communications from coast-to-coast in a country it took weeks to cross physically.

Bob Galvin, former CEO and chairman of Motorola, passed away on October 12 at the age of 89. Bob was inducted into the Wireless Hall of Fame in 2000. He ran Motorola from 1959 until 1990, and led the company from its days as an automotive radio manufacturing company through its evolution into a technology powerhouse encompassing semiconductors, space and military communications, automotive embedded control technologies, and of course, mobile communications.
